My first solo interior design project was my own contemporary space with its exciting challenges of how to make the most of this small space (950 s.f.).
These condominiums were built in 2007 with tall ceilings, transom windows, interesting angles, stained concrete floors and large sliding doors to sizable patio spaces.
My first challenge was how to fit a cozy dining area into this large main room that is a combination of living room and galley kitchen. The builder put in a narrow breakfast bar that was elevated between the kitchen and the living area, but I wanted a better sense of flow and practicality between the two spaces.

My solution was to remove the breakfast bar and bring the counter top to one continuous height, taking advantage of the now open L shape area and making the most of this space, I created an L shape Banquette to the dimensions of these two walls that we upholstered in a soft, neutral linen type fabric and is supported by tapered modern legs that almost match the espresso stained floors, giving the Banquette a warm and inviting look that appears as floating and contemporary for this space.
A simple round wrought iron, glass top table slides into the Banquette along with two wooden framed side chairs upholstered in a similar linen fabric. I can now seat 4-6 in this reinvented space, which is more than I was to get with two counter stools at a narrow breakfast bar that faced into the kitchen. Now the view from the new Banquette is to the sliders and transom windows and the kitchen is open and bright.
Visually the kitchen/dining/living areas now have a flow and an openness that is indicative of today’s living, similar to that of a “great room” but designed and executed for a small space.
