Travel & the "Stay-cation"

Updated: 5 days ago

Global tourism is bigger than ever.  We Americans are visiting all corners of planet, like never before.  Is it a new found wanderlust?  Or maybe, it is post-pandemic restlessness, in any case, we cannot get enough of travel.  The flip side of that coin are the crowds. The sheer number of people on the streets of Paris, London, Rome and other European cities is overwhelming. Some cities like Venice, Italy, in response to the deluge of tourists and the outcry of its citizens, is taking to limiting the number of visitors per day and charging for entrance to the city.  Though disappointing, it is also understandable when you consider that the great monuments and museums all over Europe are being destroyed from the sheer weight of this human tide.

I have an answer, or at least an alternative to the summer crush that is about to begin.  Why not try a “stay-cation”?  That is a term used to describe a vacation you spend at home.  A stay-cation can save you time, money and all the hassles of travel.  Just think of it, no traffic, not airport lines, overbooked flights, missed connections and the otherworldly costs of your holiday.  Why not stay home and actually enjoy your home? Revel in its beauty, comfort and style.  Maybe even consider spending just a fraction of your travel money to update and feather that nest.  You can sleep in and not feel guilty.  You can spend the day resting, relaxing and luxuriating in your mini-resort.  You might even invite friends over for a barbecue, a brunch, lunch or dinner.

I do a great deal of preaching; some may even say pontificating in these pages in regard to living well.  I have often said to our design clients at Foley & Stinnette Interiors, that I shouldn’t have to shame anyone into living well….but, I will if you make me!  This is a perfect opportunity to look at your home through different lenses.  It means considering the details of your home if you choose to stay home for that week.  ask yourself, what do I most to be truly comfortable?  What amenities do I want in my home, that I loved in that last hotel or resort where I had such a memorable stay?  The answer can be big or small and to make a stay-cation truly successful, like any trip, it takes some thought and planning to make it notable.

As always, the question is, where do you start?  That is where I come in.  let’s start with some easy things that you can do without leaving your home to prepare for your stay-at-home vacation. These are easy, simple and budget-friendly additions that will make it more fun to stay home.

  • Consider a new set of bedding. Fresh sheets and a stylish new duvet, shams and pillows can transform your bed and bedroom.

  • While considering the bedding, you could also try adding a feather bed or pillow top on your existing mattress. It adds a layer of luxury and comfort to any bed.

  • Do you have dimmers on those bedside lamps?  If not, pick up a simple plug-in version at your local hardware store. It will automatically change the mood of your room.

  • There are simple upgrades to your bathroom that will add a level of spa-like style too.

    • Add a removable shower head with a hose to your existing tub or shower. not only does the upgrade make showering more pleasurable but, it makes cleaning the tub/shower even faster and easier

    • New bath towels are a luxury at any time. treat yourself to the softest and fluffiest all-natural material you can find and afford.

    • Buy some new bath and body products.  Just like a stay in a luxury hotel, a new product or new scent will enhance your experience and pleasure.

  • Buy yourself a new cookbook that you find interesting. The style of cuisine does not matter, your stay-cation is about indulging your desires. Try making something totally new for yourself and invite friends over to share in the experience and flavors.

  • While you are trying out those new culinary endeavors, pick up some new dishware to enliven your new way of eating.  Remember, presentation is everything!

  • Don’t forget the outdoors.  There may not be a better way to create that home resort vibe, than with some stylish outdoor living space upgrades.

    • If you already have the patio furniture you love, add some new colorful outdoor pillows.

    • A fresh outdoor rug is probably in order.   Remember outdoor rugs are not really made to be exposed to the elements. Think of them as “care-free” rugs instead. Keep them under cover and they will last for years.

    • New cushions on your lounges and other outdoor furniture makes everything look and feel fresh.

    • A new umbrella in a different color than before or a warm neutral is a chic way to stay cool and look fabulous while doing it.

    • Now is the time to find that perfect outdoor tray and unbreakable glass wear to host a cocktail party….try doing an afternoon drinks soiree. It feels more casual and vacation-esque.  https://www.foodandwine.com/cocktails-spirits/sangria/sangria-recipes

    • Time to try out some new sangria recipes!  It’s the perfect stay-cation cocktail for pre-5 o’clock gatherings.

These are just a few ideas and reasons for staying home and locking the doors. If you choose the stay-cation approach, remember it is, still  all about you, your needs, your relaxation.  You don’t have to go overboard to make changes that will make staying home the best decision you make all summer.

As always, my friends,

Live Well!
